Datai Beach - Langkawi, Malaysia

With so many beautiful beaches and locations to choose from, this was a hard choice but Datai Beach on the small island of Langkawi tops the list for me. This secluded beach sits in Datai Bay and is surrounded by a jungle landscape that makes it feel very private and exclusive.

The beach is small-ish and curves around the bay in the Andaman sea. There are two 5* hotels on the bay, The Andaman and The Datai, both of which are set back in their jungle settings. There is lots of wildlife too; I saw monkeys, monitor lizards and other creatures during my time there. Despite the Tsunami of 2001 which hit the area, I went there a year later and the area is still unspoilt with crystal clear waters abundant with wildlife.

Flic En Flac beach - Mauritius

This long stretch of white sandy beach on the west coast has fantastic views across the Morne Peninsula cliffs and the island just off the coast, Ile Aux Cerfs. It really shows of island's diverse landscape and green vegetation. The waters are calm, warm and clear, the best part in my opinion is in front of the La Pirogue and Sugar Beach hotels.

Flic En Flac is an old dutch phrase meaning 'free, flat land'. The west coast is less windy than the east and you get the benefit of the perfect sunset here. Good times!

White beach - Boracay, Philippines

It's easy to forget how many beautiful beaches the Philippines have that rival anywhere like the Maldives or the Caribbean. One of my favourites being on the small island of Boracay in the Western Visaya's region, an hours flight from the capital, Manilla.

The further north you go, the more spectacular the beaches become. The White Beach is the islands main beach and runs for about 4km, nearly the entire length of the island itself. It's divided into 3 'stations' or North, Middle & South. The station naming originates from the times when boats were still allowed to bring people directly to the beach from the mainland when they used to have boat station. Station 1 (North) is an area of luxury and space with 5* resorts, Station 2 (Middle) is the 'epicentre' where there are restaurants and activities, Station 3 (South) is more known for it's greenery and nature. It's a stunning beach which is why it's in my Top 5.

Shark Beach - Nielsen Park, Sydney, Australia

This small beach is a little gem found in the upmarket eastern suburb of Vaucluse in Sydney. I actually would never have known it was there but a friend I was staying with took me one day. It's aptly named 'Shark' beach has a safety net to ensure it is safe to bathe and swim in the clear warm waters.

This beach is perfect for everyone of all ages and has spectacular views of the city and harbour in the distance. There are 3 large sheltered picnic areas so it's a perfect place to relax with friends under the many fig trees. So, just relax in this picturesque setting away from the hustle and bustle of the city only moments away.

Fig Tree Bay - Protaras, Cyprus

Whilst this beach may be a bit more touristy or 'commercial' than the others, it's nonetheless beautiful. Many package tour companies rate this as one of the nicest beaches in Cyprus and it's not hard to see why. The clean, shallow waters make this beach popular with families. I remember coming here for the first time in my teenage years.

The sandy beach stretches for 500m and the waters are clean enough for the beach to have been awarded a blue flag destination year on year. The beach, which runs the length of its own cove, takes its name from the fig trees located close to the coast.
